By definition a sail boat is one that is propelled either partially or entirely by its sails. Under this category of boats there are many different styles and sizes. Some are designed for sports or racing while others are designed for pleasure. A sail boat may be a small vessel which is only used for an outing on the lake or they may be much larger with living accommodations below the hull.
The most common of these boats is one that is known as a sloop. The sloop usually features two sails which provide the most efficient sailing. The sails are easily reversed to catch the wind and take the sail boat in the desired direction.
The Mechanics of Sail Boating
It is fairly easy to understand how a sail boat sails downwind. The wind catches in the sails and pushes the boat in the direction the wind is blowing. If the wind is coming from the side there are other mechanics at work which must be learned to make the boat travel in the desired direction.
A centerboard, or keel, will keep the boat from being pushed sideways. With the resistance from the hull the keel balances out the direction of motion and causes the boat to go straight. Without a keel you would not be able to control the direction of the boat.

Owning a sail boat will open up a world of fun to you and your family. Many of the rich and famous now consider sail boating to be their favorite hobby. There is a sense of freedom while sailing the seas without having a care in the world. With the right knowledge, sail boating can be a relaxing and enjoyable hobby which helps to relieve the stress of everyday life.
